Absolute Leaf, Absolute Living
Absolute Leaf, Absolute Living
Our products come from the place to which they return - nature.
The leaves, handpicked for our plates, have not undergone any chemical treatment whatsoever and degrade like any other fallen leaves.
Leef is globally unique in its approach to producing their Leefplates in a fully fair and sustainable value creation chain.
Leef only uses handpicked leaves, preferably from mixed crop plantations and thus helps local farmers by developing sustainable business models.
The leaves we use for our Leefplates come from the Areca palm tree, which is commonly grown in Asia for their popular Betel nuts.
The leaves are a side-product of farming that are often burned, meaning that no forests are cleared for the production of our plates.
Sustainability sets in from the beginning of our production!
After the gathered leaves have been carefully washed by local farmers, the washing water is saved and reused for soil watering. And of course NO washing detergents or additives are used.
Every Leefplate is and remains a natural leaf. It has been borrowed from Mother Nature and will return to her in its entirety.
The leaves, once carefully washed and dried, are pressed for 80 seconds into their final shape.
Leef is globally unique in its focus on sustainability and fair and safe working conditions in the production of Leefplates.
Leef works together with small rural farming contractors, safeguarding fair and safe working conditions. This approach to working with local production clusters creates jobs in rural regions of India, where help is most needed.
Leef is the sole worldwide manufacturer of palm leaf plates that uses an entirely sustainable packaging.
In offering an entirely degradable product, Leef has developed a packaging that consists of 100% natural materials.
Our Leefplates are wrapped in premium mulberry silk paper and recycled cotton fibres, which is fixed by a natural latex rubber band and a biosticker. The protective packaging for shipping is made of compostable bioplastic.
We have greatly optimized our packing technique in order to reduce the carbon footprint of our shipping process. The passage of a container from India to the EU now equals a truckride from southern Italy to Germany.
Leefplates are a fresh and natural approach to presenting food, and a great opportunity to give your next garden BBQ or company celebration a new dimension of beauty and sustainability.
The variety of possible applications in your household besides presenting food, is vast and it goes without saying that the plates are rigorously tested and food-grade approved.
Leef plates are suitable for being used in the fridge and for a short time in the microwave and oven.
(max. 2 min at 700W or max. 10 min at 200°C)
Since Leefplates have no artificial additives whatsoever, they decompose within 3 months, just as normal leaves.
In this way, Leefplates are ”borrowed“ from nature and can be directly reintegrated into the natural cycle immediately after use.
Feel free to dispose of them in your regular organic waste container, or have fun ending your BBQ or picnic by burying them in your garden or wilderness. Mother Nature will do the rest.
*to accelerate the process of decomposition in water & soil, it is helpful to break Leefplates into smaller pieces before disposal.
During a journey in 2011 in India, we discovered the local tradition of using dried leaves as dining plates.
We were instantly fascinated by the natural simplicity and beauty of this custom. We immediately realized the possible impact this practice might have in the global fight against plastic waste.
We left our respective jobs as an industrial designer and retail manager and returned to India. Whilst there, we started to set up a small production in cooperation with local farmers and manufacturers who shared our vision of a clean, sustainable and fair process. We then founded Leef in order to bring the Leefplate-revolution to Europe.
With a crowdfunding campaign we managed to finance the first full container, which was the first of many to come.
Since then, Leef has set new standards in the fight against plastic waste and is living proof of the vision of a modern lifestyle in harmony with nature.
